Merry Christmas (With a few other bits)
Well it seems fitting to wish everyone a Merry Christmas with it being Christmas Day and all. I hope everyone is having a good day, got all the presents they wanted, and hasn’t gotten to full on lovely lunches!
Now down to business. It’s been a while since I last posted anything on here, so this could be a weird post as it could contain a fair amount of stuff.
Lots has happened over the past month or so. I have been spending a lot of time with Claire which is awesome, loads of uni deadlines, building websites for clients, trialing new PHP frameworks for use on this site, spending hours on end in the recording studios, and generally having a good time.
Well I guess I should start with uni. It’s been a busy month as far as uni goes with all the deadlines being around the same week for HCI, Radio Production, Audio Processes, and Moving Image Manipulation. I’m pretty happy with most of these with the exception of the Radio unit. I have absolutely no interest in learning to write scripts, or write any documentaries myself, however that’s all this unit appears to be about and I’m one of many who feel it’s a little unfair that we didn’t get to choose our optional unit ourselves.
I have been really busy in the recording studio at uni also working on my Audio Group Project which as the title describes is a project we are working in a group to produce a single right from recording to getting the single mastered and released. I have so far spent around 16 hours in the studio recording the band, and 5-6 hours in my home studio working on a mix of one of the songs we recorded. This has been made slightly harder by moving my studio to a different room to gain more space but it’s getting there.
I’ve also started to develop websites again for a few clients Karco UK, and BS Design UK. These websites were built a while back and just needed updating to the latest information. BSD also wanted the ability to edit the website and add pages themselves. but didn’t want a fully fledged CMS for doing this, they opted to use Adobe Contribute CS3 which I personally do not like, but they like it so I have enabled the use of it on that website. Karco was a much more simple site in that they wanted a very simple CMS to just edit the text on pages. This was done using a first BETA release of this CMS.
During developing these websites I decided to have a look at this site again. Now as I’ve explained in previous posts I built this site using the Zend Framework 1.6 but this while a very powerful framework, is really not the easiest in the world to develop with. I decided to have a look around and see what PHP frameworks other than Zend that would be easier to develop this site with. I came across a fair few different frameworks but the best by a long shot CodeIgniter, this was by far the quickest and the manual is just brilliantly written.
The first time I built this website it took me 2-3 months to get it to the point you see today. With the use of CodeIgniter it has taken me 2-3 days to build this site to the same point it is. The site currently features a blogging system, static content system, and also an article publishing system, in addition to these I will have a few new features. The blogging and article systems will include a commenting system, a movie database system so I can keep track of my movies and also setup a renting type this for my friends. I have a few other ideas but these shall come at some point.
Amungst all of this I’ve managed to find time to spend time with Claire, managed to start drawing again, play guitar, and also watch many many films. I have also upgraded my 13" MacBook Intel to a 15" MacBook Pro Intel a few days ago. This will come in very handy with my audio work, graphics work, and should last me a good long while.
Well after that huge post, I shall leave it for now.
More to follow,
Adam
